Sometimes you stumble upon situations so terrible that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of chaos and just resigns itself to fate, opting for laughter as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You question about the purpose of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck suddenly, ravaging entire towns in its wake. Buildings shattered like fragile toys, and the chaos that followed was deafening. Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with the case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was dashing out the door, I trippedover and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for school.
I arrived. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. Everything. I couldn'tthink straight.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
